Types of birth marks
Vascular birthmarks Vascular birthmarks are a collection of blood vessels that appear close to the skin’s surface. They are red, blue and purple in colours.
Hemangiomas Hemangiomas are a common form of vascular birthmark and usually go away when the infant turns 5. They are flat or elevated and can change after birth. The causes are attributed to flawed migration of cells which can multiply and produce tissue typical to their type. Some classifications under hemangiomas are:
- Thick, deep and raised
- Pale, red or blue in colour
- Spongy feel when touched
- Round in shape
- Can leave a scar when they fade away
- A mix of deep and superficial hemangiomas

- Soft, smooth and bumpy
Café au lait spots These are light brown or chocolate brown spots which appear in all shapes and sizes. Found in children in the torso area, legs and buttocks area.
Mongolian Spots Mongolian spots are blue and form in the lower back and buttocks and usually occur in children of Asian origin. They usually go way by the age of 4 years.
Salmon patches Also called macular stains or stork bites they are thin, flat and red, found predominantly in the back, neck, upper lip, eyelids and in between the eyebrows.
Port wines stains Port wine stains are formed when blood vessels do not develop properly. They are usually pinkish-red and gradually turn purple in a few years.
