What are the steps involved in laser hair removal and how painful is the procedure?
The laser is first concentrated on the area of treatment in the body. The energy is absorbed by the skin and hair root, and exhausts the hair follicle, which gets removed completely. The laser might just give a slight prickly feeling. All discomfort is minimised with the application of a topical anaesthetic cream which is applied at least one hour before the procedure. Wearing clothes after the procedure will not procedure any amount of discomfort.
How many sitings would be required for me?
The growth cycle of hair spans 6 to 12 weeks starting from the base of the follicle to the surface of the skin. Due to this only a portion of the hair is treated at one particular time. We always counsel our patients to undergo at least 4 to 8 treatments in about 6 to 8 week intervals. Thereafter follow-up evaluations will indicate the amount of regrowth and touch-ups that might be required subsequently.
How much time does the procedure take and are the results permanent?
The time taken for a procedure ideally depends on the area to be treated. For example, the upper lip and chin can be done in about 5 minutes, the underarms or bikini lines could take about 10 to 15 minutes and the legs and back could take longer. Results of any treatment vary from patient to patient. Hair, after a laser hair removal treatment is expected to be shorter, finer and even paler than usual.
